Transmission driveshaft seal/tailshaft seal

Hey there, first of all, I see these names used are they interchangeable?

I need to replace mine, I'm getting a leak right where the driveshaft enters the transmission.

Is there any other seals or bearings at the rear of this T5 manual transmission that I need to replace when I get down there? I've read a little about a bearing, but that looks like a throw out bearing sleeve or something at the front of the transmission.

Thanks!

There is a metal cylinder that they call a tailshaft bushing. It more or less keeps the driveshaft yoke from flopping around too much in the transmission and which helps the seal do its job of sealing.

It requires a special tool to remove the bushing as well as a bushing installer tool.

The tailshaft seal is what I've known it to be. It could also be called an extension housing seal.

I didnt bother to watch the whole thing. I just skipped thru to see what this guys video was all about but he shows pretty much everything involved.

it's been a little since I've seen my yoke. I don't remember it being in bad shape, but I don't remember. It's been about 6 months since I had it out to replace ujoints. If it's scuffed I'll just order one off LMR or something

I can't find ANYTHING for a tailshaft bushing for a 98 3.8L they all go up to 95 and disappear. Might call ford in the morning just to see if they have it

Same, weird. They all seem to stop at 1995. I'm not 100% familiar with newer t5 transmissions. Maybe they use a bearing instead of a bushing. I cant find anything on it at the moment. On break at work.

yeah. I have the Chilton mustang repair manual for 94-98 I wonder if I should just buy the stuff for the 95 and hope for the best. I mean, it's a t5 on a 3.8L I can't imagine much would be different. But then I would have to be stuck with no parts that fit and my transmission apart...........

P.S the Chilton manual doesn't go into transmission repair much, talks about clutch and flywheel stuff and everything from yoke back to differential, but not the actual transmission.

The only difference in the t5 from 96+ was the tail housing changed in 99
The speed sensor went to an electronic version gear driven on the output shaft and the crossmember mount went further back 5/8 roughly

The tail bushing is the same as is seal.

There was a few changes in 96 to 04 as far as gears go but mostly material used.

The 04 v6 t4 is very similar to the 95gt t5 I have both of them tore apart in my garage currently.

Thanks for this info. I decided the bushing didn't have an unacceptable amount of play so I just replaced seal. No leaks anymore! I'm glad because dropping the housing is out of the question for me at this point. Thanks so much for this info.
